I just got myself a brand new pair of Seba skates. For those who don’t know what’s special with Seba skates, they are have been made with the collaboration of a French Pro skater, Sébastien Laffargue, who developed them step by step to create the best skates possible, testing each part of the skate stage by stage and increasing its quality and technique.
The skates are therefore named after their inventor, Sébastien (SEBA). This initiative was taken was Sébastien as a result of the lack of quality and custom skates out there, and especially for slalom. Of course the big brands such as Salomon and Bauer were manufacturing skates but they were aimed at the general public and not at precision experts. Only aggressive skates were carefully studies for ramps, jumps and half pipes.
What Sébastien did was to design skates from scratch, which would be suitable for precision skating, freeride and slaloms. He progressively came up with a range of skates, which are adapted for different disciplines. Check out their website for the specs on the SEBA ONE, SEBA ONE FR and SEBA TWO skates.
In summary, these skates are built with state-of-the-art materials which are extremely strong and durable, as well as comfortable. The shoe takes the shape of your foot in the first 20 hours you wear it. The straps are similar to the ones you get on ski or snowboard boots. The frames are made of extruded aluminium. The bearings are Abec 7 bearings and the wheels are Seba slalom wheels 85A (72, 76 or 80mm) with precision aluminium race spacers.
After a lot of hestitation, I decided to upgrade from my epic Bauer quad skates to some brand new and shiny Seba One-FR skates (the ones which are more hybrid and not only for slalom). Here they are:
And they ride smooth! Did the whole of the Brighton seafront from Hove to Marina in about 15 minutes (on that day when Madeira Drive was closed for the London to Brighton Mini Run. I haven’t had so much time to try them on a proper slalom run, but hopefully (weather-permitting) this weekend. I really recommend trying a pair of these if you have a chance. They rock!
